Creating a Personal Legacy Statement

A legacy statement captures who you are, what you've learned, and what you want to leave behind — in your own words. Here's how to write one that feels authentic.

A personal legacy statement is a short, deliberate expression of who you are, what you've stood for, and what you want to leave behind — in your own words. Unlike a will (which distributes possessions) or a bio (which lists achievements), a legacy statement captures something harder to quantify: your essence, your values, your story.

What a Legacy Statement Is

A legacy statement might be a paragraph or a page. It might include:

  • What you believe — your core values and convictions
  • What has mattered most in your life
  • What you've learned — wisdom you've gathered
  • What you hope for the people you love
  • How you want to be remembered
  • What you want your life to have said about who you were

There is no required format. Some people write a simple paragraph. Others write several pages. Some record it in audio or video form. What matters is that it's authentic — in your voice, reflecting what you actually believe.

How to Write One: A Process

Step 1: Reflect

Before writing, spend time reflecting. Use the questions in our values clarification guide and our legacy reflection guide. Write freely without editing.

Step 2: Draft

Write a first draft without worrying about quality. Capture the thoughts and feelings that emerged from your reflection. Don't aim for eloquence — aim for honesty.

Step 3: Refine

Return to the draft and refine it. What's essential? What can be removed? What needs more specificity? Read it aloud — if it sounds like you, you're on the right track.

Step 4: Share or Preserve

A legacy statement can be shared with family now, preserved with your documents, included in a memory book, or recorded. Some people share it widely; others keep it for a few specific people. There's no wrong choice.

A Simple Template to Start

If you're not sure where to begin, try completing these sentences:

  • "The thing I believe most deeply is..."
  • "What has mattered most to me in my life is..."
  • "What I have learned that I wish I had known earlier is..."
  • "To the people I love, I want to say..."
  • "I hope to be remembered for..."
  • "My greatest hope for those who come after me is..."

Legacy Statements Vs. Other Legacy Documents

A legacy statement is personal and reflective. Related documents include:

  • Ethical will: More formal document passing on values and wisdom
  • Legacy letter: Personal letter addressed to specific people
  • Life story recording: Narrative of your life's events

These can be separate or combined. Many people find that starting with a legacy statement gives them clarity for all the others. For the full picture, see our complete guide to finding meaning at end of life.
